The Artful Gardener was founded in 2021 by Sue Rygg, bringing nearly 30 years of hands-on gardening experience to homeowners who want to elevate their outdoor spaces.
Sue’s passion for gardening runs deep. After growing up in Plymouth, Minnesota and graduating from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she spent years in the Chicago area raising her two daughters before returning to Minnesota in 2019. Along the way, she built a diverse creative career in publishing, design, and model making, including contributing to a permanent exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
The word “Artful” reflects Sue’s lifelong connection to the arts. With a background in abstract watercolor painting and visual design, she approaches gardening as both a craft and a form of expression—blending structure, color, and texture to create spaces that feel alive and personal.
Today, The Artful Gardener is supported by a dedicated team of five master gardeners who share the same passion for detail and care. Together, they bring knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm to every project.
